Have you been feeling sadness for long periods of time, along with feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy? Or have you become so riddled with anxiety that you can no longer sit still or concentrate on your daily tasks? Depression is one of the most acute, widespread illnesses of our time, affecting nearly 15 million American adults each year, while anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults in the U.S. Commonly these illnesses are treated through prescription medications that come along with adverse and elongated side effects. This is where the introduction of TMS has proven to be fruitful.

TMS (Trans-cranial Magnetic Stimulation) is an innovative form of treatment that is FDA approved, and statistically proven to be both safe and effective. Our office provides this state-of-the-art therapy through Brainsway Deep TMS. It is with this machine that patients with long-standing mental health issues can find hope, happiness, and interest once again.

Deep TMS performs magnetic stimulation of areas in the brain which are associated with these target disorders. Deep TMS is a non-invasive yet effective treatment, which does not require hospitalization or anesthesia. TMS does not generate the systemic side effects associated with medications, such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction and worsened symptoms. It also does not produce memory loss or other commonly experienced cognitive side effects. The only common side effect noted to TMS is headaches after treatment, and scalp discomfort during treatments.

Not only are our TMS treatments harmless and dependable, it easily integrates into your lifestyle. By using the BrainsWay TMS machines, our treatments last up to 20 minutes, the shortest duration of all available TMS machines, and are administered daily for a total of 30-36 treatments. Each course of treatment lasts 4-6 weeks, with many on average seeing remission of symptoms by week 3. Statistically, Brainsway DeepTMS has proven to be 60% effective in remission rates while medications alone have proven to only be 11% effective.

After each treatment, you may immediately return to your daily routine, including driving.

Will TMS treatment be helpful, when other treatments were not?
Studies, and our own results, have shown TMS treatment to be effective for patients with depression and anxiety, regardless of how many medications were tried in the current episode.

Is BrainsWay's TMS treatment suitable for everyone?
The treatment should not be used if you have metal implants in or around the head (except for standard amalgam "silver" dental fillings). Please check with your doctor about whether the treatment is right for you or contact the Deep TMS Center at 850.877.0635, option 6, for further exclusionary criteria.

Are there any necessary lifestyle changes during a course of TMS?
As TMS deals with stimulation of the brain, it is recommended to abstain from alcohol and illicit substances during your course of treatment. Changes to daily caffeine intake are not needed and TMS does not cause any level of impairment. Once you are done with your daily treatment, you are free to resume your daily schedule.

Is TMS associated with side effects or risks?
BrainsWay's treatment has been proven safe and effective, and has no side effects as commonly seen in medication. Common side effects of TMS are headaches and scalp discomfort, generally temporary and mild. Other side effects may include muscle twitching and jaw pain during treatment. These can be treated with over the counter pain relievers.

How does TMS differ from ECT?
ECT is a treatment based on electrically induced seizures, whereas BrainsWay's treatment stimulates brain regions using brief magnetic pulses similar to those used in MRI systems, without inducing seizures. ECT requires anesthesia and has severe side effects, including memory loss. BrainsWay's Deep TMS does not involve anesthesia, has no effects on memory, and is generally well tolerated.

What do patients feel during the treatment session?
Typically, patients hear a tapping sound and feel a tapping sensation in the head area during the 20 minute treatment. To diminish the sound, the patient is provided with earplugs.

Why does TMS work?
By targeting the prefrontal cortex, TMS produces neuronal activity to positively affect mood regulation. Magnetic pulses pass through the brain which then induces brief activity in the brain cells. Determined by the protocol used, the frequency of pulse delivery is tuned to either stimulate or de-stimulate brain activity.
